A few additional features would help . . .

I have a few suggestions to make the Ultimate Linux Newbie Guide's forum(s) more user friendly.

1. Display new or changed threads in bold text for each user so (s)he will not needlessly re-visit threads. You may need to use cookies to implement this suggestion.

2. Add an editing function so a user can correct or remove any erroneous information (s)he has posted.

3. Add a 'Report this post' function so a user can report any Spam or abusive post (s)he comes across, thus allowing a forum moderator to review the reported post, and take what ever action is deemed appropriate.

These will do for starters. If any one else has any additional suggestions or comments on my suggestions, please chime in :).

Thanks for your comments. I'm not sure the CMS forums will allow this feature (1), but you may notice I have put the most recently updated forum posts in a feed on the right hand side nagigation of every page (Active Forum Topics). You can click straight onto that to find out what has been said in any given forum topic.

With regards to forum point 2, there is a preview feature available to users before posting an item which I would recommend you use to edit any errors before submission, I'll check into any options that allow you to edit forum posts after saving them.

I'm not sure that the CMS allows a 'report this post' feature, but it may be available via a third party add on. I'll check it out.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Regards,

Ali

Hi -

I've enabled 'User Editing of Topics' in the forum. I remember distinctly choosing no to this option over security concerns in the past, so if it gets abused I will remove it.

To update you on point one, I forgot that if you click on the Forums link at the top, it also shows you an icon with a folder and a star against it if the forum contains new posts or updates, so each forum is highligted when new content is there.

Still working on the report this post item.

Cheers,

Ali

None of these points are deal breakerse, they are simply functionality that I have found useful on other forums. I sincerely appreciate your time and effort, not only in your response to my post, but in providing this service to those new to Linux.

As for User Editing of Topics, if enabling this permits any user to edit any post, I agree that this may not be such a good idea. On other forums I have frequented, the user who creates a post (and only that user) has the ability to edit it after it has been committed. This feature is not worth undermining security over, it has simply saved me from a few moments of inattention on other forums in the past, and I felt that if it is available (in the above stated form), your users may appreciate it as I have.

If the ability to report a post is not available in the software used on this forum, perhaps an email solution may work as well (e.g. a mailto link pointing to an email account such as "reportapost@linuxnewbieguide.org"). It just occurred to me that you have a contact page. You could add a "report objectionable post" category there, and modify your tool tip for the Contact Us link in the tool bar near the top of the page to add the inquiry Report a post.

Thanks for your comments ewilcox.

As I say, I've allowed editing and I think it works properly. Let me know if you see anything untoward though!

I'll be sure to get a reasonable solution to the 'report a post' problem soon.

Thanks again for your helpful input!

Cheers,

Ali
