All the latest news about what's happening at the Ultimate Linux Newbie Guide can be found here. Whether it's updates to the main chapters, additions to the hot topic, a fiery thread on the forums or perhaps some more 'international' news, it's all here!
16 August 2008: Annoucing complete site revamp coming soon! Wow! I can't believe that the Ultimate Linux Newbie Guide has been going since 2001! Over all this time, I think the look and feel of the site only changed dramatically once and that was waay back at the beginning. I've been so busy over 2007 and most of the first of 2008 that I didn't have any time to make any changes to the site apart from the odd update here and there, so it's still the same site, which is a shame, because I know that people out there still visit it on a regular basis. Some have never used Linux before, and some are just googling on in. So, I think it's time that this site was updated to reflect current web trends, include much more dynamic content, more rich media, make it easier to read, better functioning with other browsers and also make it easier to edit - one of my main bugbbears with the ULNG is that making small changes often end up in lots of time consuming HTML and CSS changes. So, coming real soon now will be a brand new Content Management (CMS) driven version of the ULNG with loads of fresh content. I'll be using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS as the demo install as well as updating the graphics and hopefully once and for all putting the forum back in place. I trust you are excited as I am over this new prospect! 31/05/2006: PDF Version tidied up! Yep! You can now actually read it! If you look at the pdfs page You will see that all the seperate chapters have been removed and replaced with the single PDF that includes all the chapters, most of the hot topics and the extra bits that were missing from the last guides like the partitioning bit and the networking bit from chapter 5. The best news though is that it is now fully readable, as a lot of people have been telling me that their version of Acrobat seems to have problems with the pdfs aligning the text badly. This was down to the HTML to PDF conversion software I was using. It looks fine on my Adobe Acrobat 5 now so hopefully it should be good for everyone, please let me know if it's still dodgy though! Finally, the overall file size is down 2MB to 3MB, so the download will be a bit quicker for those still on dialup as well! 08/04/2006: ULNG Update: PDF versions of chapters are now available You can find the PDF copies of the main chapters on the front page or on the chapter index Have a look here. You can download the entire set of chapters in one big PDF, or download individual chapters, all for your offline reading pleasure! 07/04/2006: ULNG to get PDF versions of Chapters Afer being hounded for the chapters in PDF format, they're now almost ready for your offline reading pleasure. Stay tuned! They'll probably be up tomorrow, so grab 'em whilst they're hot! UPDATE: For those of you who really can't wait, have a look Here. 07/04/2006: ULNG Gets dugg! Today was the ULNG's busiest ever day on record, with over 15,000 hits as news website digg.com got wind of the ULNG! After the steady popularity over the last five days, it was hardly surprising that some news website somewhere would get wind of the ULNG. That place was digg.com, a hugely popular tech based news web site that shows news based on the readers ratings. The ULNG finished today on around 1200 'diggs', making it the second most popular site in the Linux/Unix category. Yay! 02/04/2006: ULNG Gets some press After writing in to TUX Magazine, the ULNG becomes even more popular over night! I decided to write in to the popular online PDF based free magazine, TUX Magazine. It's aimed at a normal desktop user audience, which meets very well with the target audience of this web site. I wrote a letter saying that I wanted to make people aware of this site, and that I believe that the ULNG is a perfect accompaniment to a more traditional 'regular' publication such as a magazine. The letter was published in this month's (April) copy of Tux and as a result I am happy to see a sudden, steady burst in vistors. Hopefully this site can help out even more Linux newbies now! |
